The best way to find out about the club is to visit us and meet some members.
The club is open on Sundays during terms 4 and 1 from 8.30am until about 4pm.
Our club is run by volunteers, so if your query cannot answered by the frequently asked questions (FAQs) and you’ve had a good look through the website, then send us a message and we will get back to you, hopefully within a couple of days.

we’re delighted to have Adele Phillips as Head Coach for the upcoming season. Adele will be overseeing the coaching team for the Sunday morning sailing school where the club will be running the Australian Sailing Dinghy Program for the first time.
A few words from Adele…
Sailing is a spectacular sport in which you never stop learning. Every time I am out on the water, whether it’s a nationals race or a training day, I take something away from it. Learning to sailing is a gift few have the privilege of acquiring. Here is a little background on how I started my sailing journey…
My father comes from a long line of sailors and boat builders. At 8 years old I completed a learn to sail course at the same club my father did. At age 12 my sister and I won the sabot 2-up State Championships held at Vaucluse. As a 1-up in sabots I won the Australia Day regatta. At 16 my crew and I won the cherub division at the Combined High School Championships. At 17 sailing in a cherub with my father, who I sail with to this day, we won Cadet National Champions.
I am a qualified Instructor with a racing endorsement enabling me to teach Start Racing and Better Racing. I’m also trained in First Aid and CPR. Over the years I have coached:
4 seasons at Drummoyne (kids and adults LTS courses in sabots, RS Fevas and Visions)
2 seasons at Georges River (kids, youths and adults LTS and Racing courses in optimists, lasers, RS Fevas and Visions)
Sabot association training weekends for States and Nationals
2 seasons at Vaucluse
I truly love the sport and the opportunity to teach others what I’m passionate about is rewarding in itself. It’s incredible to watch the progress of the kids over just eight weeks. I endeavour to create a fun, safe and inclusive learning environment for everyone involved! I look forward to welcoming you all to the club in a few short weeks.
Best regards
Adele
Over the winter we were extremely lucky to be gifted 11 Pittwater Junior (PJ) dinghies by Manly Yacht Club, bringing our total fleet to 18 boats.
PJs are awesome boats for kids to learn on. They’re easy to rig (no shrouds!), they don’t fill with water when they capsize (awesome!) and with just two ropes to worry about they are super easy for kids to get to grips with.
The additional boats means that for the first time we will be providing club boats for Discover Sailing, Start Sailing 1 and Start Sailing 2. That means you wont need to buy a boat until you’ve completed two years of sailing at the club. Result!
For the die hard Sabot fans (and those who already own a boat) your kids will be able to participate in Start Sailing Sailing 1 & 2 courses in their own Sabot if they prefer.
Believe it or not, term 4 sailing kicks off in just over two weeks with the first session on Sunday 13th October.
We are busy finalising the coaches and allocating kids to different groups. If you would like to have your children involved during term 4 please ensure you register them in the next few days.
Sailing School registration applies to existing as well as new members. If you have any questions about which course to sign your kids up for, either check the course descriptions here or drop Jules an email on sailingschool@va12sc.org.au.
If your children are participating in Discover Sailing, Start Sailing 1 or Start Sailing 2 they will be using club boats. Kids in Better Sailing, Start Racing and Better Racing will need their own Sabot or you can charter a club Sabot.
Sailing School registration and payment can all be completed here
The Sunday morning sailing school program kicks off on Sunday 13 October.
You can read about the different courses here and make your online bookings here.
We’ve very slightly tweaked the run sheet for the new season:
8.30am - 10.00am Discover Sailing, Start Sailing 1 & 2
10.00am - 11.00am Better Sailing, Start Racing, Better Racing
(we will be encouraging kids in these programs to join the Sabot race starting at 11am, off the water by 12.30pm).
Over winter we acquired an additional 8 PJs, bringing our total fleet to 15 boats. This will enable us to use PJs for both Start Sailing 1 & 2 (if you already have a Sabot you can use that instead if you prefer!).
Any questions on the above, drop an email to sailingschool@va12sc.org.au
Don’t forget to sign up for the holiday camps:

Dear Members,
As some of you know, we were able to secure a grant to update our kitchen facilities - how lucky are we!
The renovations are well underway, however, the kitchen won’t be usable until October.
So, please, BYO food and beverages for the next few weeks when you are at the clubhouse.
The lovely Fiona Nearn and Sasha Paul have agreed to head up our beloved canteen so keep an eye out for the canteen roster to sign up and ensure all our young sailors are fed!
Many thanks and here’s to a great season ahead!
Sunday, September the 8th.
Round 2 of the VA12SC Sprint Series for 2019/20.
Sabots, Flying 11s, and Cherubs.
We’re looking for a parent to assist with the sailing school for the upcoming season.
Responsibilities
Manage participant enrolments
Liaise with Australian Sailing to order logbooks
Manage sign on/off of kids on Sunday mornings during Term 4 & 1
Maintain instructor database (contact details, qualifications, availability)
The processes are established so the jobs wont take too much time, but the nature of the responsibilities mean it will suit someone who likes being organised - and who wants to help make the sailing school experience lots of fun!
If you’re interested, please email Jules Hall on sailingschool@va12sc.org.au
Feel free to dob in / suggest others who you think might be keen!
A glorious day at the club on Sunday morning for Father's Day.
The children kindly cooked the Fathers a gourmet breakfast. Then they rigged their boats without any help, set up the ducks, loaded escort with the course markers and untangled the anchor ropes*.
Reluctantly they finally agreed to stop doing all the work, and to have some time for themselves, climbing into their boats and going for a sail.
Max Nearn opened the season with a pair of bullets in the Sabots.
The Cherub fleet decided it was too light for skiffs and opted for PJs. As did some of the kids too young for Sabots.
Lots of laughter and good times.
*As if!
This weekend we celebrate Father’s Day at the VA12SC with the Father’s Day Cup!
Come down for a BBQ Breakfast from 9 am then make Dad proud out on the water.
As usual there will be a briefing for Sabots at 9.30 am The starters gun will fire at 11.
Flying 11s and Cherubs will follow on in the afternoon.
It’s the first day of Spring and the weather looks great so lets all get the new season off to a great start.
On Sunday 18th August we held the AGM, welcoming in new committee members and bidding farewell to others.
Richard Steyn stepped down as Commodore after four years in the role, replaced by Robert Ugarte.
Richard has invested an enormous amount of time into the club during his time as Commodore. Notable achievements include the growth of the Sailing School, the integration with Australian Sailing and their associated coaching programs and perhaps most significantly, the re-introduction of a 12’ skiff fleet with the Cherubs.
On behalf of the members we extend a very big 'thank you to Richard and look forward to seeing him back at the club enjoying more sailing and less organising!
James Hammermaster stepped down as Treasurer, replaced by Ian Manovel. We welcome Ian and thank James for bringing the club’s finances into the digital age. James has also been a key driver of the increasingly positive financial position of the club. James remains on the committee as a general committee member.
